Wilderness Series, "Sage and Cedar"

The Wilderness Series consists of carved wooden books covered with earth. The "text" on the open pages is comprised of natural objects specific to a given site that speak not in English, Spanish, Tewa or Swahili, but in an international ecological language. These indigenous materials often display the effects of human intervention, the "scars" which Irland terms "perfect poetic justice, a kind of echo which reminds us of the original site and its alteration.
