David Potts

David Potts was born and raised in Ohio and first entered Purdue as a landscape architect major. After trying out for the theatre’s production of Marat/Sade and discovering the world of set design, he changed majors, graduated, and moved to New York City. While there he had the good fortune to work for the famed costume designer Patricia Zipprodt for a year, and then went on to get his Master’s degree in set design at Brandeis University. Back in New York he designed many off-Broadway productions including the acclaimed AlbumThe Seahorse, and The Boys Next Door. He designed numerous productions for the Manhattan Theatre Club and Circle Repertory Theatre, where he was also a resident designer. On Broadway he designed the revival of Born Yesterdaywith Madeline Kahn, As IsThe Musical Comedy Murders of 1940, and the national tours of I Never Sang for My Father, and Sleuth. He has designed extensively for regional theatres across the country and for seven years was the design consultant and key designer for The Berkshire Theatre Festival. For five years he taught scenic design at SUNY Purchase in New York. He has designed scenery for fashion shows, commercials, trade shows, and on ice, the world tour of 100 Years of Disney Magic. For television he has designed the movies of 5th of July and Kennedy’s Children, and since moving to Los Angeles has art directed numerous television series. Currently he art directs No Ordinary Family for ABC. He received an Emmy Award for HBO’s Deadwood and has received nominations for Emmy, Art Director’s Guild, Ace, Drama Desk, and L.A.’s Ovation awards.
