Elena Coda, Associate Professor of Italian
Class Title: The Spirit of Italian Comedy

Comedy plays a pivotal role in popular and literary culture. In this course
students will discover what is unique to Italian comedy, how it works, its
particular aesthetic  characteristics and its relationship to specific political
and social issues. More generally, this course attempts to examine the
universal role of comedy. The course examines Italian comedies not as
an isolated national phenomenon, but rather within the broader context
of comedic traditions around the world. Thus, by the end of the semester
students will have the intellectual tools required to analyze and understand
those comedies (sit coms, blockbuster films, reality shows, etc.)
they actually enjoy watching in their spare time.
