Majoring in Business Communication

The Brian Lamb School of Communication at Purdue University is consistently ranked among the top programs in the United States according to  The Gourman Report. The Lamb School seeks to advance students’ ability to express themselves across various modes of communication; it teaches students to recognize their audience and to speak with confidence. The Lamb School offers a variety of opportunities for students to practice career-oriented skills through its video news magazine,  Fast Track, school newsletter,  The Communicator, and student-run PR,  Boiler Communication.

Business Communication focuses on the theories, concepts, and skills necessary to understand how communication functions in and between organizations.  Coursework provides a background in organizational development, leadership and communication training, technology use, diversity and culture in organizations, global organizations, team processes and decision making, and social network analysis.

Students may choose to study business communication, or they may choose a different area of focus, including:

Communication of Science & Technology
Health Communication
Interpersonal Communication
Media & Mass Communication
Political & Civic Communication
Public Relations & Strategic Communication


*Regardless of communication concentration of interest, choose Communication on the undergraduate admission application.


Upon completion of the program, Communication majors may choose to enter a field directly or indirectly-related to communications. Student experiences have included:

All Purdue University College of Liberal Arts majors prepare students with the skills identified as contributing to professional success: communicating and listening well, an understanding and appreciation of diverse points of view, creative thinking and problem solving, a collaborative mindset, the ability to synthesize complex ideas and communicate them clearly, and a Boilermaker work ethic.

Communication majors develop skills that are applicable to many different careers. These skills may include but are not limited to:

  • Writing press releases or other media communications to promote clients.
  • Establishing cooperative relationships with representatives of communities, employers, or public interest groups.
  • Developing public relations strategies --based on objectives and promotional policies-- that influence public opinion or promote ideas, products, or services.
  • Responding to requests for information from the media.
  • Utilizing Design and Web creation software, such as Adobe Systems Creative Cloud (Illustrator and Photoshop), Apple QuickTime, YouTube, Podcasting software, and Cascading Style Sheets.
  • Composing arguments for public speaking; being able to speak with authority and pitch an idea effectively.

Communication majors may choose to enter into the workforce using the skills they have acquired at Purdue or to attend graduate school upon completion of their degree. Past graduates have gone on to:
