Google just made the case for more foreign language education.

The Washington Post recently reported on a 2013 Google study of its hiring, firing, and promotion data since 1998. The study, called Project Oxygen, shockingly concluded that “among the eight most important qualities of Google’s top employees, STEM expertise comes in dead last.” Click the following link for a full story:

Marcia Stephenson, associate professor of Spanish, and some of the students in the Spanish and Portuguese department in the School of Languages and Cultures were recently the special guest in the Tom's Wold Language Cafe broadcasted through UCCS Radio. The Office of the Provost and the Office of the Vice President for Information Technology have announced the recipients of grants being awarded through the new Instructional Innovation Program. The new campus-wide grant program is investing in instruction, instructional equipment, and technology that promote innovations including creative pedagogies, active learning and other new and emerging approaches to teaching.

Included in the list of 2015-16 grant recipients are: "Development of Performance-based Assessment in Foreign Language Teaching" -- Atsushi Fukada, professor of Japanese; Wei Hong, professor of Chinese; Jessica Sturm, associate professor of French; John Sundquist, German; and Colleen Neary-Sundquist, assistant professor of Spanish.
