School of Interdisciplinary Studies Linguistics

Linguistics

Linguistics involves the scientific study of the structure of languages, how humans acquire and use language, and how languages change. The Linguistics program at Purdue will help you develop the skills necessary to analyze any language and to understand the role language plays in societies and cultures around the world. Offering a flexible selection of courses, the program will help you develop the skills necessary to understand how language influences society and cultures around the world. Our courses cover the methods of analyzing language, roles of languages in societies, word formation processes, mechanisms of producing speech, and more. The undergraduate program also offers a minor in Linguistics.

Purdue's graduate Linguistics program is distinguished by a strong applied focus, while still providing thorough theoretical training. Graduate students have been able to apply theory while studying areas like bilingualism, language acquisition, corpus linguistics, natural language processing, and sign languages. Our many on-campus linguistic labs provide opportunities for research and collaboration.
