Video of the Week

Welcome back students! To start us off, here is yet another award winning documentary by Dominik Gliatis. In this short documentary, Dom explores the views of the people in Germany as they see more and more refugees come into their country. Congrats Dom!



As most of you know, we are welcoming a new instructor this year! Please help us make Dr. Troy McKay feel like one of the FVS family and say hi if you see him around! This year he is teaching FVS 491 Documentary Production, FVS 336: Screenwriting, and the Foundations of Cinema course.

With a new year comes a revival of FVSO! Following the newly elected leadership with President Alyssa Fritz, Vice President Ciera Ostburg, Treasurer Riley Johnston, and Secretary Lennon Michaelangelo!  The club is now open to everyone regardless of their major and will be focused more on workshops, competitions, guest speakers, social outings, and collaboration on projects! Becoming a member is easy, go onto Boilerlink and select become a member: FVSO Bolier link. If you have any friends who are interested in acting, vfs, motion graphics, costuming, props, audio, directing, ect. we would love to have them! 2017 brings about some changes to the World Film Forum. The screenings will be  at the WEST LAFAYETTE LIBRARY (208 West Columbia Street, West Lafayette) on Tuesdays SEPTEMBER 12, 19, and 26, starting at 7:30 p.m.
As always, screenings are free of charge, shown with English subtitles, and preceeded by a brief introduction and followed by a discussion.
The theme of this year’s World Film Forum (Purdue’s School of Language & Cultures community film & discussion series) is "Community at the Crossroads.”
 
Tuesday , September 12: Central Station (Brazil-France 1998), directed by Walter Salles (1h55)
Part road-trip adventure, part fractured-family drama, and part political allegory, Central Station is a poignant story of a jaded, retired school teacher who recuperates meaning in her life through the improvised adoption of a homeless boy whose mother is killed in a traffic accident.

Tuesday, September 19: Hafu: The Mixed-Race Experience in Japan (Japan 2013), directed by Megumi Nishikura and Lara Perez Takagi (1h30)
“Hafu” is a Japanese term for someone who is half-Japanese and half- “other.” This documentary movie takes a look at the lives of five Hafu individuals and families who came from a wide variety of backgrounds. The movie shows the reality of increasing populations of people of non-Japanese ancestry or origin living in Japan.

Tuesday, September 26: Nous trois ou rien (France 2015), directed by Kheiron (1h40)
In an inspiring and hilarious, yet tough and honest film, director and stand-up comedian Kheiron tells the story of his family’s journey from the Iranian political unrest of the late 1970s, to a disadvantaged and excluded Parisian suburb.
Presenter: Riham Ismail, PhD Candidate, Comparative Literature 

BoilerTV wants your videos and short films! The campus TV station is looking for student-made content they can share with their 13,000+ audience members! So if you have a video you made in class that you think is amazing, a short film that you poured your heart into, or even if you have an idea for a show and want to pitch it to us, send your media or ideas to fritz12@purdue.edu!
