Pi Sigma Alpha - 2015 Model United Nations // Bogota, Colombia
Five political science students, Tatiana Brown, Melissa Deach, Jasmine Edison, Adam Hassanein, and Caelum Mroczek, and Professor Natasha Duncan attended the Sixth Annual Model United Nations (MUNUR15) at the Universidad del Rosario in Bogota, Colombia, November 6 - 9, 2015
Model United Nations is a simulation of real-world diplomacy. It provides students opportunities to develop negotiating and decision-making skills as they represent nation-states on committees in multilateral institutions. In preparation for their participation, our students researched the history, culture, economy, domestic political issues, and foreign policies of the respective nation-states they represented.
At the MUNUR15, over 300 students from all over the world, including India, the United States, Germany, Peru, Venezuela, and Canada, gathered to participate in the simulation of 14 committees across five inter-governmental organizations, with an aim of attending to contemporary global and/or regional challenges.
At MUNUR15, the countries our students represented, committees on which they served, and their respective tasks were as follows:
Tatiana Brown: Rwanda, African Union, considered matters on women, education and security
Melissa Deach: Philippines, San Francisco Conference 1945, designed the Security Council of the UN (imaged themselves as the framers of the Council during its creation)
Jasmine Edison: El Salvador, Special Political and Decolonization Committee (SPECPOL) - negotiated the status of non-self-governing territories and paths to self-determination for El Salvador
Adam Hassanein: Justice on the US Supreme Court, considered the case of the Japanese internment camps during WWII
Caelum Mroczek: Philippines, Special Political and Decolonization Committee
(SPECPOL) - negotiated the status of non-self-governing territories and paths to self-determination for the Philippines
Our students spent four days intensely negotiating within committees and networking with their newfound colleagues. The opening ceremony featured speakers including a former Colombian ambassador to Japan, the Secretary General of MUNUR15—a Universidad del Rosario student—the university's president, a senator, and the Fulbright director for Colombia.
A particular treat was meeting with Purdue alumnus, Gilberto Gomez, and his wife, Pilar. Gilberto is from Colombia and has been living in Bogota for 25 years. He graduated from Purdue in 1969!
