Bill Mullen

Please join me in congratulating Bill Mullen, professor of American Studies, on the publication of his most recent book, Un-American: W. E. B. Du Bois and the Century of World Revolution, by Temple University Press. In the book, Bill explores the political transformation of W. E. B. Du Bois from an anti-racist reformer and activist to a committed socialist. Bill argues that Du Bois’s support for the Russian and Chinese revolutions, India’s decolonization, and African, Asian, and Caribbean independence movements was responsible for this shift in his activism.

To research the book, Bill analyzed Du Bois’s only unpublished book manuscript, “Russia and America: An Interpretation” as well as articles he wrote for the Soviet press. Bill was aided by American Studies doctoral student Annagul Yaryyeva in translating some of Du Bois’s work from Russian. His work was supported by a Center for Humanistic Studies fellowship as well as a research assistantship, both from the College of Liberal Arts.

Congratulations, Professor Mullen!
