From the Dean

Dear Friends,

As I watched the cleanup efforts necessitated by Superstorm Sandy, I was reminded that a strong community is essential to survival. Political Science professor Daniel Aldrich, in fact, has studied communities after tsunamis, hurricanes, and floods, and has found that neighbors and friends are the key to recovery.

Our vibrant campus community helps Liberal Arts students accomplish great things, combining classes with real-world experience. For instance, current Mass Communication major Steven Yang works as a professional photographer in Purdue's Marketing and Media unit, learning how his photography skills interact with coursework.

The strength of our faculty members is continually apparent as they work on crucial world problems, including rights for women, as political science Professor Laurel Weldon illustrates. Professor Weldon is also the 2012 recipient of Purdue's Violet Haas Award, which honors people who enhance opportunities for women on campus.

And our alumni are doing amazing things as well. If you have not read about Heather Penney and her service in the Air National Guard, I invite you to read the Purdue Alumnus story about her.

The Purdue CLA community is a strong one, and your generosity has sustained us even in a difficult economic climate. You help us award scholarships, hire the best and brightest faculty members, and bring excellent speakers to campus. As you consider your end-of-year giving, consider including Purdue CLA in your plans.
