From the Dean

Dear Friends,

The calendar may have already marked the vernal equinox, but in Indiana spring has been slow in coming.  Although the weather has stayed cold, the achievements of our faculty, alumni, and students have been anything but, as evidenced by their many awards and activities.

Professor Marianne Boruch was recently honored with the $100,000 Kingsley Tufts Poetry Award for her 2013 publication The Book of Hours. Professor Boruch has been at Purdue as a member of the Creative Writing faculty since its inception in 1987.

CLA teaching continues to be recognized by the University. Mariko Wei, an associate professor in the School of Languages and Cultures, has been selected as a the Charles B. Murphy recipient, the University's highest undergraduate teaching honor. Professor Wei teaches Japanese and linguistics.

Research activities remain a top priority in the College. Using data from Ngogo chimpanzees in Uganda’s Kibale National Park, Assistant professor of Anthropology Bryce Carlson, looked at chimpanzee feeding habits and published about the association between the primates’ eating times and the nutritional quality of their food.

Just as our faculty make an impression on campus, so do our outstanding alumni. Purdue alumna Capricia Penavic Marshall (BS 1986 Political Science) is highlighted in the latest Alumnus Magazine for her work as Chief of Protocol for the United States Department of State.

Our current students have a distinctive style, as well. I'm sure you will enjoy reading about our five "style makers" highlighted in March's "Five Students Who" showcase.

I hope you enjoy reading about our faculty, alumni, and students and look forward to hearing your feedback about the College and its activities. Your commitment to the College provides the foundation for the exciting things that happen here.  For that I am most grateful.
