From the Dean

Dear Friends,

The arrival of a new academic year is cyclical, but there’s nothing rote about the exciting developments happening this fall in the College of Liberal Arts. In the past few days, we have announced $4 million in gifts and grants that affirm and enhance our programs and a $3M strategic investment from the central administration in the College.

Thanks to a $3 million dollar gift from an anonymous donor, matched by $3 million in discretionary funds authorized by President Mitch Daniels, the Department of History will gain add two professorships in the history of science and the history of medicine to create a new, specialized area of study.

The Denver-based Daniels Fund (founded by entrepreneur Bill Daniels) awarded a $1 million dollar grant to the Purdue Institute for Civic Communication (PICC). PICC, led by Ambassador Carolyn Curiel, a clinical professor in the Brian Lamb School of Communication, builds on the success of Project Impact.

We continue our series of alumni profiles to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the School of Humanities, Social Sciences, and Education, the College's forerunner. Maya Rockeymoore (MA 1996; PhD 2000, Political Science), president and CEO of Global Policy Solutions, makes her mark by analyzing the way policy affects our lives.

Our dynamic alumni begin as excellent students like Heather Cherie Moore, a PhD candidate in American Studies who mentors young African-Americans through community leadership.

As we welcome the fall semester, it's especially important to me to thank you for your generosity and dedication to CLA as I near the end of my term as Dean in June 2014. A nationwide search is underway to find our next leader, who will no doubt be equally inspired by your commitment to the College.

Thank you for sharing in our success and for recognizing that a liberal arts education is essential to producing critical thinkers and ready to boldly lead in a complex world. We welcome your feedback on all of this fall's wonderful news.
