From the Dean

Dear Friends,

While we patiently wait for spring to arrive on campus, the long winter hasn’t prevented the College of Liberal Arts from moving forward in a number of areas. I’m proud of the visionary research and teaching of our faculty, who challenge our students to think critically and produce alumni who lead boldly.

In fact, we want to share more about the interdisciplinary work of our faculty during a series of discussions on the relationship between the Liberal Arts and STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) disciplines on April 10. The day will culminate with a panel considering the unique benefits for students from an understanding of both perspectives, moderated by Dr. Moira Gunn, Purdue alumna and host of “Tech Nation” on NPR/SIRIUS-XM and director of the Business of Biotechnology Programs at the University of San Francisco.

Exploring the interdisciplinary work in Liberal Arts is timely, with the approval of a new School of Interdisciplinary Studies within the College. The school will bring increased visibility to Purdue's interdisciplinary programs in the arts, the humanities, and the social sciences.

Liberal Arts student Jazna Stannard is working to increase the visibility of another group of people: the nation’s homeless population. The nonprofit organization she started collects toiletries to distribute to those in need.

Many of our alumni are making a difference across the globe, as well, and we’ll celebrate five of our Distinguished Alumni, along with the College’s Outstanding Seniors, at our annual banquet on April 11. We hope you’ll join us.

The College will also participate in a new event this year on April 30—the Purdue Day of Giving. We hope you’ll share in the excitement of supporting your alma mater. It is your continued support that propels us to new advances and the ability to provide our students with a Liberal Arts education that prepares them for meaningful careers and inspired leadership.
