Jonathan Lande
Please join me in congratulating Jonathan Lande, assistant professor of History, for his recent contribution to The Journal of African American History.
Jonathan’s article, “Lighting Up the Path of Liberty and Justice: Black Abolitionist Fourth of July Celebrations and the Promise of America from the Fugitive Slave Act to the Civil War,” appeared in the summer 2020 issue of the journal, which the University of Chicago Press publishes quarterly on behalf of the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH).
The article details how Frederick Douglass and other African American abolitionists lampooned Americans’ Fourth of July celebrations in the 1850s and 1860s while millions were enslaved and, in their own celebrations, re-envisioned America as an antiracist nation.
