Kaveh Akbar
Please join me in congratulating Kaveh Akbar, assistant professor of English, for his appointment as poetry editor at The Nation.
Kaveh took over the position on Sept. 1 and immediately began accepting submissions for The Nation’s website and print publication. The Nation’s poetry editor position cycles on two- to three-year terms.
Founded by abolitionists in 1865, The Nation has featured some of the world’s most renowned voices in poetry and literature within its pages. Its list of notable contributors includes Kaveh himself, the author of Calling a Wolf a Wolf (Alice James, 2017) and Pilgrim Bell (Graywolf, 2021), and editor of the forthcoming The Penguin Book of Spiritual Verse: 100 Poets on the Divine (Penguin, 2022).
In an article announcing his appointment, Kaveh said he looks forward to introducing new voices that challenge “notions of what poetry can do and be,” including those of poets who all too often have been marginalized within the traditional framework of American publishing.
