Please join me in congratulating Clinton Brown, Ph.D. candidate in the Brian Lamb School of Communication, for winning the Donald P. Cushman Memorial Award from the National Communication Association.
The annual award honors the top student-authored paper from all units that competitively rank papers for programming at the NCA’s annual convention. Clinton and co-author Elizabeth Hintz examined how people communicatively negotiate family expectations and what constitutes a family in their essay Childfree and ‘Bingoed’: Competing Discourses of Reproductive Normativity and Autonomy Animated in Online Narratives of Conversations about Voluntary Childlessness.
“Clinton’s excellent research in health communication demonstrates the best of what our School is known for: theoretical depth, methodological rigor, and meaningful real-life application,” said Marifran Mattson, Professor and Head of the Lamb School. “We are thrilled that his hard work is being recognized with such a prestigious award.”
Clinton and Elizabeth accepted the award on Nov. 16 at the NCA 105th Annual Convention in Baltimore.
