Laura Zanotti
Please join me in congratulating Laura Zanotti, professor of anthropology, for winning National Science Foundation support on a project where she serves as co-PI.
Laura and project PI Bryan Pijanowski, professor of landscape and soundscape ecology, received an NSF Coupled Natural and Human Systems Program award to support their work on “CNH2-L: Using Sound to Advance Conceptual Frameworks of Resilience of Integrated Grassland-Pastoralist Systems.” Bryan is convener of the Purdue Center for the Environment (C4E) biodiversity research area and lead of the Global Soundscapes project, and Laura is associate director in C4E.
Noting that grassland biomes are widely being converted to croplands, mined, and grazed by domesticated livestock around the world, the researchers will “investigate features of a human-pastoral system that may demonstrate resiliency, thereby promoting sustainability.” Their collaborative research with local herders and knowledge of changing soundscapes will provide valuable insight on the future of sustainable grassland management.
