Yunping Tong
Please join me in congratulating Yunping Tong, doctoral candidate in sociology, for winning a Global Religion Research Initiative (GRRI) Dissertation Fellowship from the Center for the Study of Religion and Society at Notre Dame.
Tong’s dissertation, titled “Does Religion Matter? A Study of Sex Ratio at Birth, Son Preference, and Abortion Attitude in Contemporary China,” examines the religious influence on demographic outcomes in China. The dissertation, which aims to offer a more complete explanation for the imbalanced sex ratio at birth and its regional variations in China, is the first to empirically investigate the effects of religion on the imbalanced sex ratio at birth at both individual and contextual levels.
The GRRI awards an average of eight one-year doctoral dissertation fellowships per academic year to students whose work focuses on contemporary religion(s) in select global regions. Funded by the Templeton Religion Trust, the fellowship provides $28,000 ($23,000 in salary and $500 for travel and minor research funding) to support each recipient’s “writing year” of dissertation work.
