Kevin Woolley and students
Please join me in congratulating four interior design students from the Patti & Rusty Rueff School of Visual and Performing Arts who were recently honored in the SOURCE Awards, a student competition focused on the use of lighting as a primary design element.
Led by Laura Blythe, who won the $2,000 grand prize, Purdue interior design students claimed four of the nine lighting awards presented in the competition. Student Hannah Bulow also won a $500 honorable mention prize, and Mercedes Arenas and Cassandra Crawford both won special awards of recognition. Each of the student winners were under the direction of Kevin Woolley, assistant professor of interior design in the Department of Art and Design.
The winners will be recognized on May 7 at LIGHTFAIR International in Chicago.
Sponsored by Eaton Corporation, the SOURCE Awards are open to students who use Eaton’s lighting fixtures and controls products in a conceptual interior or exterior lighting design. The contest is open to students studying architecture, design, engineering, and other related disciplines.
Students in Woolley’s interior design class also swept the awards at the American Society of Interior Design (ASID) Indiana student interior design competition. Tasked with reconfiguring and conceptually designing a 130,000-square-foot community center in Mason, Ohio, Purdue students took first, second, and third place in the competition.
Sydney Gunty won first place for her design titled “Emerge,” Blythe won second with “Esplanade,” and Crawford took third with “Mason, OH Recreation Center.” The winners were announced on March 23 at the ASID Design Interaction Day in Carmel, and each winner received a next-generation office chair from Knoll furniture or a $150 gift certificate.
