Jeffrey Turco
Please join me in congratulating Jeffrey Turco, associate professor of German in the School of Languages and Cultures, for being named a Senior Fellow at the Martin Marty Center for the Public Understanding of Religion in the Divinity School of the University of Chicago.
The Marty Center offers “scholarly perspectives on the religious questions facing the wider public, while encouraging faculty and students to situate their scholarly questions within a broader cultural frame of reference.” Jeffrey’s work, which includes the edited volume New Norse Studies: Essays on the Literature and Culture of Medieval Scandinavia (Cornell 2015), examines questions of religious conflict, conversion, and co-existence, particularly at the intersection of the Germanic cultures of Europe and medieval Christianity. Jeffrey is a faculty fellow in the Cornerstone Integrated Liberal Arts Program.
The fellowship comes with $10,000 in funding that Jeffrey will use during his upcoming research leave in 2019. He plans to work on an anticipated second book focused on the intersection of religious, literary, and proverbial language in Grimms’ Children’s and Household Tales as a lens on the tangled “juncture of realities code-named ‘religious’ and ‘secular’” (M. Martin) in German culture and society in the nineteenth century and beyond.
