Marianne Boruch
Please join me in congratulating Marianne Boruch, professor of English, for her selection as a Senior Fulbright Scholar for spring 2019.
In her first year as an Emeritus Professor, Marianne will conduct research and write a series of poems and small lyric essays in Australia at the University of Canberra’s International Poetry Studies Institute, part of their Center for Creative and Cultural Research.
This month, and closer to home, Marianne and with others will keynote the 2018 Medical Humanities Collective at 7:30 p.m. on March 22 at Fowler Hall, with her eighth collection’s title poem, “Cadaver, Speak.” Students in the Indiana University School of Medicine-West Lafayette and poets from Purdue’s Creative Writing MFA program will assist Boruch in a “Readers’ Theatre” to present the poem in collaboration with choreographers and dancers led by Holly Jaycox from the Dance Division of the Patti and Rusty Rueff School of Visual and Performing Arts. The event is an outgrowth of the Cancer Culture and Community Colloquium, a partnership between the College of Liberal Arts and Discovery Park.
A gallery show, “From the Dissection Lab,” will also complement the Medical Humanities event. The show will feature work by Department of Art and Design faculty members and students in response to poems from “Cadaver, Speak.” Marianne’s own drawings and watercolors will also be included. The show runs March 19-23 in Pao Hall of Visual and Performing Arts, including a March 20 reception from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m., with Marianne delivering a brief gallery talk at 5. All events are free and open to the public.
