Daniel Kelly
Please join me in congratulating Dan Kelly, associate professor of philosophy, for being offered a fellowship at Stanford University’s Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences (CASBS).
The CASBS fellowship program is open to scholars whose work helps advance research and thinking about “the full range of human beliefs, behaviors, interactions, and institutions.” Dan’s proposal, entitled, “Syncing Selves with Societies: Cultural Evolution, Individualism, and the Normative Mind,” sketched out his project to explore humans’ deep psychological interdependence and the intertwining strands of human biological, cultural, and moral nature. He plans to examine how current empirical work on social norms, our susceptibility to tribalism, and the function of social identities can best inform moral theory, and the ways in which the emerging picture may be at odds with various forms of individualism, including the American secular mythology of self-reliance.
Recipients of the CASBS fellowship will spend the 2018-19 academic year in residence at Stanford. In addition to the program’s research opportunities, recipients may engage with other fellows at frequent events, lunches, seminars, and informal working groups.
