Rick Thomas

Please join me in congratulating Rick Thomas, Professor of Music Composition and Sound Design for Theatre and Music and Coordinator of Design and Production in the Patti and Rusty Rueff School of Visual and Performing Arts, for the publication of his new book, Music as a Chariot: The Evolutionary Origins of Theatre in Time, Sound, and Music (Routledge).

The book operates from the premise that theatre is a type of music, and that understanding how music affects the theatre experience shapes our approach to the performing arts. Rick solicited input from directors, playwrights, actors, and designers to offer a multidisciplinary perspective on how music can deliver the intended messages.

Rick, who won a 2017 Distinguished Achievement Award in Sound Design and Technology from the United States Institute for Theatre Technology, will host a book launch to celebrate the book’s release. The event will be held Monday, April 16 at 5:30 p.m. at the Patti and Rusty Rueff Galleries in Pao Hall. Rick will read from the book, which will be available for purchase at a discounted price. The book launch will be free and open to the public, and refreshments will be served.

Congratulations, Professor Thomas!
