Patricia Sullivan

Please join me in congratulating Patricia Sullivan, professor of English, upon her selection for the 2016 College of Liberal Arts Discovery Excellence Award for the Humanities. The Discovery Excellence Awards represent the College’s highest recognition for scholarly achievement in the humanities and social sciences. Nominated by her colleagues and selected from a field of outstanding candidates, Patricia has been recognized for the extraordinary strength, impact, and creativity of her research.

Since arriving at Purdue in 1985, Patricia has directed the technical writing program. She currently leads the graduate program in rhetoric and composition in the Department of English, and has directed 55 completed dissertations. She has been instrumental in starting the bachelor’s degree in professional writing and secondary areas for the doctoral degree in technical and professional writing and in rhetoric, technology, and digital writing. She has co-authored or co-edited five books and recently completed a term as co-editor, with Associate Professor of English Jennifer Bay, of Peitho, the journal of the Coalition of Women Scholars in the History of Rhetoric & Composition.

Patricia is an active member of the Association for Computing Machinery’s Special Interest Group on Design of Communication (SIGDOC), and is the only recipient of both the Diana and Rigo Awards bestowed by the group. She received the Diana Award in 2015 as a member of the steering committee for the Women in Technical Communication. She won the Rigo Award in 2014 for her outstanding contributions to the field of technical communication and her mentorship of several generations of other scholars and practitioners.

Congratulations to Professor Sullivan!
