Laurel Weldon

Please join me in congratulating Laurel Weldon, distinguished professor of political science, upon her selection for the 2016 College of Liberal Arts Discovery Excellence Award for the Social Sciences. The Discovery Excellence Awards represent the College’s highest recognition for scholarly achievement in the humanities and social sciences. Nominated by her colleagues and selected from a field of outstanding candidates, Laurel has been recognized for the extraordinary strength, impact, and creativity of her research.

Laurel is the inaugural director of the Purdue Policy Research Institute. Her work focuses on the role of social movements in influencing public policy; violence against women; representation and public policy; women, work and poverty; and comparative and international research that is global in scope. She has consulted for international organizations such the UN and the World Bank, as well as national, state, local and Tribal governments.

Laurel recently co-edited the first-ever Oxford Handbook on Politics and Gender (Oxford, 2013) and is currently part of an interdisciplinary team working on transnational social movements.
