Ian Lindsay
Please join me in congratulating Associate Professor of Anthropology Ian Lindsay upon being awarded a grant of $221,000 from the National Science Foundation for his project “Collaborative Research: Fortifications and Long-Term Political Process in the Bronze and Iron Age South Caucasus.” This grant will fund two years of archaeological research involving pedestrian and aerial site survey and test excavations in northwestern Armenia. Ian and colleagues from Cornell, Stanford, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and the Republic of Armenia are investigating how ancient fortified landscapes and warfare provided social and material conditions that influenced how political processes unfolded during the second and first millennia BC. Ian presented preliminary findings of this work at the International Congress on the Archaeology of the Ancient Near East in Vienna in April.
Ian’s fieldwork employs pioneering methodological approaches, including a new tablet-based mobile GIS data collection system and the use of drones and photogrammetry software for research and conservation purposes. These techniques were developed through seed grants from the College and the Office of the Executive Vice President for Research and Partnerships.
Ian was also recently elected president of the American Research Institute of the South Caucasus (ARISC), a nonprofit organization that fosters research ties between scholars in the U.S. and the Caucasus region. In May, he co-organized a GIS workshop for archaeologists in the Caucasus, assembling scholars from the U.S., Europe, and the Republic of Georgia.
