Jasmine R. Linabary and Nusta Carranza Ko

Please join me in congratulating Nusta Carranza Ko, a doctoral candidate in the Department of Political Science and Jasmine R. Linabary, a doctoral candidate in the Brian Lamb School of Communication, who are recipients of a 2016 K. Patricia Cross Future Leaders Award.

The Cross Award recognizes graduate students who show exemplary promise as future leaders of higher education, demonstrate a commitment to developing academic and civic responsibility in themselves and others, and place a strong emphasis on teaching and learning. The award, which is presented by the Association of American Colleges and Universities, will be given at the association’s annual meeting this week.

Nusta, who is from Peru and South Korea, focuses on the influence of international norms on state behavior, especially in the area of human rights. She conducted field research in Uruguay, Peru, and South Korea while on a Purdue Research Foundation Fellowship during 2014–15. She earned a Graduate Teaching Certificate from Purdue's Center for Instructional Excellence in 2014, is currently completing the Advanced Graduate Teaching Certificate, and has been inducted into the Purdue Teaching Academy as an associate fellow.

Jasmine’s research emphasis is on organizing, new media, and social change, with particular interest in gender and participatory methodologies. She is a teaching assistant and graduate certificate holder in the Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Program. She is also a research assistant with the Purdue Peace Project, a locally led peacebuilding initiative in Ghana, Liberia, Nigeria, and El Salvador that aims to reduce the likelihood of political violence.

We are proud to have outstanding graduate candidates Nusta Carranza Ko and Jasmine R. Linabary in the College of Liberal Arts. Congratulations on the Cross Awards!
