Change of Degree Objective
A student who has current eligibility to register in a graduate degree program at Purdue and who wishes to be admitted into the Linguistics Program should submit a completed Request for Transfer of Department (G.S. Form 17) to the Graduate School. The student should also prepare a complete new application, but should submit it directly to Linguistics Program Graduate Office. It is not necessary to submit another application fee. The application should include a statement of intent indicating the specific area of Linguistics to be pursued, a current transcript, the name of the Purdue faculty member with whom the student has studied as a reference, and a writing sample. The student should refer to the information for new applicants concerning the nature and purpose of the writing sample which is outlined below.
- Applications for graduate study in Linguistics at the M.A. level should include a course paper or other work that the student feels represents his/her general writing ability. It need not be on a topic from Linguistics.
- Applications for admissions to the Ph.D. program must include a writing sample relevant to Linguistics. This writing sample may be something written specifically for the application, a term paper for a previous course, or published work.
- The purpose of the writing sample for applicants to the M.A. program is to indicate the student's general writing ability. It need not be on a topic from Linguistics.
- The writing sample at the Ph.D. level should show the student's general writing ability and also that the student has a sufficient understanding of Linguistics to enter at the Ph.D. level rather than the M.A. level.
