Brian Alberts
Primary Advisor: Professor Larson

Major Field: 19th century US History
Minor Fields: US in the World 1789-1918 (emphasis on transnational approaches), and Travel History Research Interests: I focus on US history prior to the Civil War, both the Early Republic and Antebellum periods. I am particularly interested in slavery and the cultural roots of sectionalism, as well as connecting the Civil War era to broader transnational trends. An excellent window into these connections are travelers, both inter- and intranational, who penetrate highly disparate regions, introducing as well as reacting to foreign ideas.
