Patti & Rusty Rueff School of Visual and Performing Arts
Zhen Yu Cheryl Qian received her PhD in interactive arts and technology from Simon Fraser University in Canada. She is developing new approaches to explore interaction design possibilities in the context of industrial design. As a boundary crosser, she is interested in studying and developing cognitive interactive systems, employing interdisciplinary research methodologies to improve design quality and adopting innovative technologies to better accommodate the user experience.
Her publication list includes journal articles, conference proceedings, and book sections in the interdisciplinary domains of interaction design, consumer product design, digital learning, information visualization, visual analytics, and computer-aided design. Collaborating with colleagues from the Purdue Polytechnic Institute and the College of Engineering at Purdue University, she has won seven Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Visual Analytics Science and Technology challenge awards from 2010 to 2014. While competing with computer scientists around the world, she emphasized the innovative aspects of design while employing novel ideas and methods of data visualization.
Cheryl developed and leads the innovative, interdisciplinary Purdue University Interaction Design MFA program. She encourages undergraduate and graduate students to participate in collaborations across campus and other universities in community service, special education, cybersecurity support, and game design.
