Melanie ShoffnerAssociate Professor
Melanie Shoffner joined Purdue in 2006, with a joint appointment in the College of Liberal Arts and the College of Education. Her research focuses on secondary English teacher preparation, examining issues of reflective practice, the pedagogical and affective concerns of preservice and beginning teachers and the meaningful integration of technology for teaching and learning.
Prof. Shoffner has published in numerous scholarly journals, including English Education, English Journal, Teaching and Teacher Education, Contemporary Issues in Technology and Teacher Education and Reflective Practice, and presented her work at leading education conferences. She frequently mentors undergraduate students in research through the CLA Dammon Dean's Scholars program, the COE Undergraduate Research Training program and the Margo Katherine Wilke Undergraduate Research Internship program. Her current research projects examine the role of study abroad in preservice teacher development, beginning English teachers' issues of practice and the place of emotion in teacher preparation.
Prof. Shoffner teaches in the English education program. Since 2008, she has led the summer study abroad program Reading London focusing on the study and teaching of British literature. Her teaching has been recognized through departmental teaching awards and, most recently, the Kenneth T. Kofmehl Outstanding Undergraduate Teaching Award. She is a member of the Conference on English Education (CEE) Executive Committee and the Microsoft Partners in Learning Program for Higher Education Advisory Board
Prof. Shoffner completed her PhD in Education at the University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill in 2006. She earned both an AB (English and History) and MAT (English) from Duke University.
