Mariko Moroishi Wei received her PhD in Linguistics from Georgetown University in 1998, the same year she joined the Purdue faculty. Mariko is the faculty coordinator of the Japanese Language Program, and her research interests include second language acquisition, language pedagogy, and bilingualism. Mariko’s current research investigates the development of lexical and reading skills in English–Japanese bilingual children with autism spectrum disorder. She has developed a variety of courses on Japanese language, Japanese language instruction, Japanese studies, and applied linguistics at both undergraduate and graduate levels. Her passion for teaching and mentoring has previously been recognized with the Kenneth T. Kofmehl Outstanding Undergraduate Teaching Award in 2012, the Charles B. Murphy Award for Outstanding Undergraduate Teaching in 2013, and her induction into Purdue's Teaching Academy that same year.
