John Sundquist joined the Purdue faculty in 2002 after receiving his PhD in Germanic linguistics from Indiana University. John specializes in historical linguistics of Germanic languages with a focus on grammatical variation and change in the history of German, Danish, Swedish, and Norwegian. His research incorporates network science and complexity theory in examining the ways in which language acts as an evolving, dynamic system. John has authored and co-authored peer-reviewed articles in Linguistic Inquiry, the Journal of Germanic Linguistics, and the Nordic Journal of Linguistics, among others. John’s secondary area of scholarly activity involves the teaching of German language and culture. He has published in peer-reviewed journals like Die Unterrichtspraxis: Teaching of German and in edited volumes published by Heinle and Cengage on innovative methods in the teaching of German film and beer and brewing in German culture.
