Manushag Powell earned a Ph.D. and MA in English at the University of California, Los Angeles, and a B.A. in English at Yale University. She is also Director of Graduate Studies in English. Among her teaching interests are British literature and culture of the long 18th Century, genre and culture, novels and other forms of prose writing, British drama, gothic writing, literature about pirates, and dragons.

A Purdue faculty member since 2007, Dr. Powell has been recognized as a University Faculty Scholar and won the Kenneth T. Kofmehl Outstanding Undergraduate Teaching Award in 2015-16. Among her publications are Performing Authorship in Eighteenth-Century English Periodicals (Bucknell University Press, 2012) and British Pirates in Print and Performance (Palgrave, 2015), which she co-authored with Frederick Burwick. Most recently, she co-edited Women’s Periodicals and Print Culture in Britain, 1690-1820s: The Long Eighteenth Century (Edinburgh University Press, 2018) with Jennie Batchelor.

Among her research interests are the rise of the professional author in England, periodical and essay writing, British women writers, gender and authorship, genre and literature, performance and literature, and pirates.
