Sarah Mustillo studies the social origins of child mental health issues using quantitative analyses of longitudinal data. Her recent work explores the links between parent mental health and child mental health in at-risk populations, such as children in the child welfare system and children in military families, as well as the relationship between adverse childhood experiences and subsequent trajectories of physical and mental health. She further seeks to understand how different types of stressors impact identity formation, particularly among adolescent girls. Other work examines applied statistical topics, such as optimal model specification for multiple imputation and testing group differences in longitudinal models for categorical data. Her work, much of it funded by the National Institutes of Health and the Department of Defense, has been published in such journals as the Journal of Health and Social Behavior, the Journal of Marriage and Family, Social Psychology Quarterly, Sociological Methods and Research, and the American Journal of Sociology.
