Arne Flaten is head of the Patti & Rusty Rueff School of Design, Art, and Performance and professor of art history.

Flaten completed a Ph.D. in Italian Renaissance art history at Indiana University-Bloomington. Previously he served as director of the School of Art at Ball State University, and successively as chair of visual arts and associate dean of fine arts at Coastal Carolina University.

Growing up in a diplomatic family, he had the opportunity to live and study in various parts of the world, including Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. Flaten writes on topics ranging from 15th and 16th century Europe to 5th century BCE Greek architecture, portrait medals, and American comic books.

His research has been supported by the Fulbright Commission (twice); the Getty Research Institute; the Kress Foundation (three times); the Center for Advanced Study in the Visual Arts (CASVA) at the National Gallery of Art, Washington; the National Endowment for the Humanities (twice); the National Endowment for the Arts; and the Renaissance Society of America. In 2014, Flaten was elected to the European Academy of Science and Arts—Salzburg.
