Dr. Troy McKay earned his PhD from Iowa State University. The title of his dissertation is A liberal arts education in film production: Instructional assessment of student film projects. In addition, he has earned a MA from Woodbury University in Burbank, CA, a BA from the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls, IA and a Graduate Certificate in Film and Video Production from UCLA. Prior to this appointment, he was an Assistant Professor teaching film and video production at Hawkeye Community College in Waterloo, IA.

In addition to Dr. McKay’s academic experience, he worked in freelance film production in Los Angeles, CA for the over 15 years. In his career, he has accumulated over 20,000 hours of “on set” time and has worked on projects for ABC, CBS, and NBC as well as other major studios. He has also worked as a professional actor appearing in numerous commercial campaigns, television shows and feature films. Most recently, he worked as the lead actor and producer of the film “Road to the Open”. This film included such actors as Judd Nelson, John Schneider, and Eric Roberts.

Dr. McKay’s research interests stem from his educational background and professional experience in digital film and video production. He is pursuing research that is focused on the educational process that film and video production students engage with in higher education. Areas of exploration are curriculum development of cinema and film/video production programs, film/video production education in the liberal arts context, instruction and assessment of creative collaboration, and organizational development and leadership in the creative arts.

He is a current member of the Screen Actor Guild (SAG), American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (AFTRA), the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE), the University Film and Video Association, the Iowa Motion Picture Association and the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi.
