Lessons of the Coleman Report at 50

Widely recognized as perhaps the single most important 20th century research study on education, the Coleman Report explored the variables in student academic achievement. Fifty years after James S. Coleman published his study of more than 600,000 students and teachers, the keys to providing the best educational opportunity to the broadest number of students remain elusive. The Coleman Report is particularly meaningful to us at Purdue as James Coleman studied here, completing a degree in chemical engineering before moving on to his doctoral studies in sociology.
