Placement Statistics & Rankings

In 2010, The Chronicle of Higher Education examined 21 areas of criteria in a nationwide survey of doctorate programs. Purdue consistently ranks highly across the board, but stands out in two crucial areas:

  1. Among programs “ranked highly if they are strong in the criteria that scholars say are most important,” Purdue English has been placed as high as 27th in the nation.
  2. Among programs with “similar features to programs viewed by faculty as top-notch,” Purdue English has been placed as high as 15th in the nation, highlighting our department’s status as a recognizably prestigious program for serious, productive scholars and highly professional graduate students.

U.S. News & World Report publishes annual rankings of colleges and graduate programs, in which Purdue consistently ranks among the top 75 institutions in the country. The methodology for this report factors in “a survey of academics at peer institutions,” and uses a scale of 1 (marginal) to 5 (outstanding). Measured overall, Purdue University ranks 56th in National Universities, while our esteemed graduate program in English ranks 60th with a 3.1 measurement.
