Construction of Race and Ethnicity

The dimensions and meaning of race and ethnicity vary across groups and social contexts. Work in this theme examines the different ways that race and ethnicity have been constructed for different groups in the United States, and in different national contexts. It examines the ways that race, religion and sexuality inflect such constructions.

Past events that fit into this theme so far include Mala Htun’s presentation on race, gender and ethnicity and political representation in Latin America. It also includes the symposium panel on stereotypes and cultural marginalization. The CRDI is excited to further explore this theme through a symposium and a graduate student conference.
