  • Ryan Plis received his PhD from Purdue University in 2015 for which he was awarded the College of Liberal Arts Distinguished Dissertation Award. He is a Visiting Assistant Professor at Purdue for the fall semester. Dr. Plis is a cultural anthropologist whose research focuses on the intersections of gender and sexual identities with race and class subjectivities in the Mid-Southern United States. Through his work, Dr. Plis foregrounds the complexities and diversity of transgender and gender variant experiences, challenges normative notions of what it means to be transgender and gender non-conforming, and shows the powerful impacts of secondary marginalization within the "transgender community." His research also centers the experiences of the friends, families, and partners of transgender and gender non-conforming people, demonstrating how gender variance reshapes the essential nature of kin ties.
