Art History Professional Organizations

College Art Association (CAA) Founded in 1911, the College Art Association promotes excellence in scholarship and teaching in the history and criticism of the visual arts and in creativity and technical skill in the teaching and practices of art; facilitates the exchange of ideas and information among those interested in art and history of art; and fosters career development and professional advancement. Identifies and develops sources of funding for the practice of art and for scholarship in the arts and humanities.

Archaeological Institute of America (AIA) This national association brings together archaeologists, art historians, and experts of ancient literature, all of whom share a common interest in the classical world and is historical development. The AIA allows specialists in several disciplines to exchange the results of recent scholarship and learn about current methods of archaeological research. The Annual Meeting in early January has many parallel sessions of papers with varied themes, and one can also learn about the latest archaeological discoveries.

North American Branch of AIEMA (the International Association for the Study of Ancient Mosaics) The study of ancient mosaics of Greek, Roman, and Byzantine origin is a major field of art historical research, internationally. Mosaic art was used not only to make decorative pavements but also to ornament walls and ceilings of buildings, both public and private. In North America, mosaic scholars, who deal with questions of artistic style and imagery and the identification of workshops, meet every few years with experts of ancient painting and stuccoes, which allows for a lively exchange of ideas about how these decorative arts relate to their architectural setting. Students are encouraged to attend these meetings. The next colloquium will be held at the Baltimore Museum of Art in October, 2017.

Medieval Institute at Western Michigan University (in Kalamazoo) Every year the Medieval Institute gathers together scholars in many academic areas, ranging from literature, art, and music to social and political history, for the International Congress on Medieval Studies. Papers are presented and there also occur panel discussions, roundtables, and performances. It is a multifaceted event, in which faculty members and students from Purdue University often participate.

European Postwar and Contemporary Art Forum (EPCAF) was created in 2010 as a worldwide forum for scholars working on postwar and contemporary European art. Since then, EPCAF has organized numerous panels at conferences in the United States and in Europe, and launched a book series. By sharing information and exchanging ideas across the globe, EPCAF is expanding our knowledge and understanding of the history of art and criticism, and highlighting the different national methodologies that are brought to bear on these histories.

Midwest Art History Society. The Midwest Art History Society brings together academic, museum-based, and independent art historians in the common goal of scholarly inquiry and the exchange of ideas.

Southeastern College Art Conference (SECAC) Founded in 1942, SECAC provides advocacy and support for arts professionals and engenders opportunities for the exchange of scholarship and creative activities through an annual conference and publications. Though founded initially as an organization of artists, scholars, and arts professionals from the southeastern states, SECAC has grown to include individual and institutional members from across the United States and around the world, becoming the second largest national organization of its kind.
