Art History Events

The art history faculty organizes and promotes, with very active student participation, several exhibitions, public lectures, and excursions which widen our students’ exposure to and understanding of art of many types. Several of the exhibitions presented here at Purdue are described in the “Exhibitions” section of our Website. We also invite outside speakers to come and give “Lectures” and workshops on topics of art history linked to some of our own exhibitions. Our guest speakers have included several museum curators and administrative officers. Among them are Kirsten Krause Gotway, who spoke about the African collection at the Indianapolis Museum of Art (IMA); John Teramoto, curator of Asian art at the IMA, who spoke about Japanese woodblock prints; and James Nottage, vice-president of the Eiteljorg Museum in Indianapolis, who gave a lecture on art of the American West. We also sponsor field trips to these institutions in order to see their special exhibitions and view their permanent collections. In so doing, we arrange for guided tours by museum personnel or docents, specifically trained for this purpose. We also frequently sponsor trips to the Art Institute of Chicago (See link to “Excursions”).
