Office Information

  • Jay M. Stein joins Purdue as a Visiting Professor in American Studies. He holds a Ph.D. in Urban and Regional Planning from the University of Michigan and is also a Fellow of the American Institute of Certified Planners.  He previously served on the faculty in the School of Geographical Sciences and Urban Planning at Arizona State University. At ASU he was selected in 2012 by students as one of the university’s “Most Influential Professors.”  Dr. Stein has considerable administrative experience having previously served as a department chair, interim dean, dean, provost, and founding center director at major AAU institutions - Georgia Institute of Technology, Stanford University, University at Buffalo, and the University of Florida.  He has served on the editorial boards of four major planning journals and held major positions at the state chapter and national levels in the two major planning organizations – American Planning Association (APA) and the Association of Collegiate Schools of Planning (ACSP).

    His research and service agenda focuses on the well-being of children, issues of social equity and diversity, growth management, and the promotion of active living environments to enhance health. His teaching interests include Global, Health, Sustainability and the Built Environment and Planning History and Theory, where his book, Classic Readings in Urban Planning, is the main text in many planning courses. His current book project is Gross National Happiness as an Alternative Paradigm in Urban Planning.
