Information for Students

To register for COM 490, please email Josh Dexter-Wiens,

There is no requirement at Purdue that says you have to sign up for credit to do an internship. Some students elect not to register and still do the internship and still put it on their resume. Some companies require that you earn credit so you should check with the employer.

To receive credit for your internship, you must register during the same semester you are interning. This includes summer work. As a full-time student during the fall and spring semester, it should cost more in tuition. However, if you are part-time during the semester or a part-time summer student, internship credit(s) will cost additional tuition (e.g. summer 2013-2014 fees were about $350 per credit for in-state and $950 for out-of-state students). There is no retroactive credit.

Students not admitted to upper-level communication (e.g. you are a minor or a pre-communication student) can earn 1 credit for a minimum of 60 hours of work. Admitted students can earn up to 3 credits, depending on how many hours worked (60 hours = 1 credit). Because of tuition concerns, some students who qualify to earn 2 or 3 credits in the summer elect to sign up for only 1 credit so the tuition is lower.
