About the Author

Kate O'Neill lives in Taos, New Mexico where she teaches, writes, paints, and has a private counseling practice. She holds a B.A. in Art History from Tufts University, an M.Ed. in Counseling from Harvard University, and a Doctor of Education degree in Human Development and Psychology, also from Harvard. She is coordinator of the Women's Studies Department at the University of New Mexico-Taos, where she teaches in the Psychology and Women's Studies Departments.

In addition, Dr. O'Neill co-leads workshops centered on women's creativity with Ginger Mongiello, M.A., LPAT., an art therapist and a practicing artist in Taos for over twenty years. These groups provide open studio space where participants may work in clay, wood, paint, found objects, masks, sand tray, printmaking and other media in a structured supportive environment. The powerful healing capacities of the imagination are honored, as well as the creative aspects of improvisational play and attentive awareness.

Dr. O'Neill is also a licensed professional counselor and has a private practice where she works with individuals and groups, adolescents and adults, from a feminist relational perspective. She is working on a forthcoming book based on the dissertation work cited in this essay.
