Textbook Orders Maymeser Fall
Basic musicianship is developed through singing, playing instruments, reading and writing music, and listening and moving to music. Music teaching methods and materials are surveyed, including lesson planning, experiences in teaching, and observation of children in music classes. Prerequisite: formal admission to the Teacher Education Program. MUSIC 361 / Music Theory I / 3 credits A course in music fundamentals. Students acquire skills in music reading, music listening, and beginning piano techniques. (Credit may be established in this course by passing an examination. see below) MUSIC 362 / Music Theory II / 3 credits A study of melodic and harmonic processes in diatonic tonal music. Students develop skill in analytic reading of music scores, musical listening, and functional piano techniques. Prerequisite: MUSIC 361 or consent of instructor. MUSIC 363 / Music Theory III / 3 credits A study of art and popular music representative of diatonic and chromatic tonality. Students develop additional skill in analytic reading of musical scores, musical listening, and functional piano techniques. Prerequisite: MUSIC 362 or consent of instructor. MUSIC 372 / Baroque Music / 3 credits A study of music from the Baroque era. Class activities are focused on analysis of music representative of various genres. Prerequisite: MUSIC 361 or music reading ability. MUSIC 373 / Classical and Romantic Music / 3 credits A study of music of the twentieth century and beyond. Class activities are focused on analysis of music representative of various genres. Prerequisite: MUSIC 361 or music reading ability. MUSIC 375 / Selected Topics in Music / 3 credits The MUSIC 250 Comprehension Exam is the culmination of the Independent Study version of the course. Students study at their own pace, using materials (texts, CDs, and study guides) that are on file in the Hicks Undergraduate Library. Once study for the exam has been completed, students obtain a Credit/Placement Exam Authorization (Form 231) from their academic advisor, and then call the Division of Music (765.494.3708) to schedule the exam. The exam consists of 45 matching items; 40 multiple choice items (including 20 items based on listening to selected compositions); and 15 True-False items. These items cover such topics as musical genres, elements of music, composers, historical styles, and musical processes and procedures in the Western classical tradition. The MUSIC 361 Proficiency Exam is designed to assess competence in the rudiments of music which students have gained from earlier study and experience. There is no independent study version of this course, and no materials are available to help students prepare for the exam. The exam consists of 80 short-answer items and 20 keyboard and keyboard harmony items. The 80 short-answer items cover pitches and scales; keys and key signatures; intervals; triads and chords; rhythm and meter; and harmonic analysis. In the 20-item keyboard and keyboard harmony section of the exam, students must demonstrate their ability to play major and minor scales; play simple (I-IV-V7-I) chord progressions in major and minor keys; and harmonize a simple melody with these chords. A score of 70 or above is required to receive credit for the course. Students who are interested in taking the MUSIC 361 Proficiency Exam must obtain a Credit/Placement Exam Authorization (Form 231) from their academic advisor before calling the Division of Music (765.494.3708) to schedule the exam. |
