MID SUMMER PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT SUGGESTIONS FOR YOUR STUDENT

For students working summer jobs:

Encourage your student to talk with his/her supervisor about writing up a performance evaluation. If his/her supervisor is willing to write a positive evaluation, have your student keep the evaluation for a future portfolio item. A supervisor can also be a professional reference for upcoming jobs on campus, internships and professional positions. When your student has completed the summer job, encourage him/her to add the job to his/her resume.

For students doing community service/volunteering:

Encourage your student to request a written reference from the professional(s) connected to the community service/volunteer experience. Your student can keep the reference for a portfolio item. Encourage your student to take photographs of him/her participating in the service/volunteer experience as well. This is terrific tangible evidence of civic participation that can be displayed in a professional portfolio. Your student should definitely add this experience to his/her resume as well!

For students doing an internship:

Encourage your student to request a written reference, evaluation form and any other documentation related to his/her performance during the internship. Your student should be encouraged to keep in contact with the professionals he/she worked with during the internship. This is a great way to start networking for future professional positions. And, of course, your student should add the internship experience onto his/her resume.
