Student Advisory Board
Student Advisory Board members are successful students who excelled in a study strategies class offered by the Academic Success Center. They share their experiences and study tips by invitation of Purdue student organizations and housing units.
To become a member you must excel in one of our study strategies classes and be recommended by your professor. For further informatoin, see below.

Nick Boling
Nick is a Senior, majoring in Aeronautical Engineering. This is his 4th year as a SAB member. He hopes to design planes one day. In his spare time Nick likes to weight lift, read, and play sports. After taking a GS course, Nick noticed his time management skills improved immensely. His role model is his dad, who has always shown him that hard work and perseverance gets rewarded in the end. His advice to freshmen is to set realistic goals and stay focused. We pay to learn not to party.
Stefanie Flesher
Stefanie Flesher is now a mentor in the Student Advisory Board and is leading workshops. She’s a junior in the College of Liberal Arts, majoring in Psychology. Stefanie is an avid photographer. You may find her at the Horticulture Park, taking pictures of flowers. Her older brother is a role model for her. She says that he has a lot of drive and will do whatever he needs to do to achieve his objective. Stefanie advises freshmen to have calendars. Everything will be easier to plan if you are organized and have everything marked.
Jessica Helmer
Jessica is a Senior and is an Interior Design major in the College of Liberal Arts. Jessica loves traveling and spending time with family and friends. After taking a GS course her time management improved because she now spaces her activities out. She used to help manage her friend’s schedules. Her dad is also very goal-oriented and works hard for his success which is why he’s the biggest role-model in her life. Her advice to freshmen is to attend all your classes. Take advantage of the free time you have during the day as well as pay attention during lecture.
Alejandra Roman
Alejandra will graduate in December, majoring in Youth, Adult and Family Services in the Department of Child Development and Family Services. She likes to relax with music, go for walks and hang out with her friends. She says that her grandmother is her role model because no matter what hardships came her way, she always worked through them successfully and never gave up. Alejandra believes that time management is crucial. She advises freshmen to go to class and do your homework. She says that you can’t afford to miss any information that the professor is giving in class. Also, since you’re paying so much tuition, it makes sense to get your money’s worth.
Meghan Shanahan
Meghan is a Junior in the College of Consumer & Family Science, majoring in Diatetics. She enjoys many activities such as hanging out with friends, watching movies, water sports, and dancing. Her parents have become the biggest influences in her life because of their hard work, dedication, and unwillingness to give up. Meghan has helped her friends with courses they struggle in and has enjoyed it. After completing her GS course her time management skills and organization has improved immensely. Her advice to freshmen is to manage your time and organize because it’s important not only for college but also in your future careers as well.
Alex Bradley
Alex Bradley is a sophomore in the College of Liberal Arts, majoring in Psychology and Law and Society. Alex likes to spend time with her friends and family. Exercise is important to her. As a G S student she learned how to prepare for exams. Her parents are both her role models. She says that they work hard and stay positive, even when something is hard. They also look for the good in every situation. She has given many of her friends tips on staying organized and not getting behind on school work. Her secret to academic success is to go to class and do your homework because little points add up fast and pay off.
Emily Fleagle

Emilie Fleagle is a sophomore in the College of Liberal Arts. She likes to read, draw and just hang out with friends, talking or watching movies. She tutored other students in high school while participating in the National Honors Society. The most important skill she learned from her GS courses was time management. She learned to break apart the hours of her day and use time to the fullest extent. She now values her time and manages her assignments well. She says the secret to academic success is to always try your hardest. With a little more time, you can often get a better grade and will not look back with regret. So do your best not to procrastinate.
Cherri Odom

This is Cherri Odom’s first year in the Student Advisory Board. She is a junior in the College of Liberal Arts, majoring in Health and Kinesiology. She enjoys watching comedies and funny shows. Working out and getting enough sleep are important to her. As a GS student she learned how to organize better so that she was less overwhelmed by deadlines. Her dad is her role model. He’s organized, focused and graduated from college without outside personal or financial support. She advises students to go to class; do the work and success will come.
Mallory Rexing

Mallory is new to the Student Advisory Board. She is a sophomore in the College of Liberal Arts. Her hobbies are farming, 4-H, road tripping, reading swimming, shimmers and music. In her spare time, she likes to hang out with friends, read or shop. Mallory has much leadership experience. In 4-H, she was President of her club, Head Counselor for camp and a Group Advisor. She was also the secretary of German Club and President of the orchestra. She says the secret to academic success at Purdue is time management. If you manage your time wisely, you will have time for both academics and leisure. If you set times to study, you will more than likely be able to get things done and still have time for other activities.
Katy Yeoman

Katy is a sophomore in the College of Education. Katy asks, “Spare time? What’s that?” When she does have some time, she spends it with her boyfriend, friends and family. Often they watch new movies. She keeps a very tight schedule in her mortar board in which she writes days off, all exams and big projects. Her mom is her role model because she loves her life so much. She says that she is the most caring person she’s ever known. In high school, Katy was an honor society tutor. Her secret to success for freshmen is TIME MANAGEMENT. You finally have the freedom you want. Don’t abuse it. She advises student s to always make studies come first.
Zach Tucker

Zach is a sophomore in the College of Liberal Arts, majoring in Movement and Sports Sciences. Zach enjoys playing tennis, wakeboarding and just trying new things. Zach says that in his GS class, he learned how to utilize his time. This has had a positive impact academically and socially. He gets his studies done and knows how much time he has to socialize. His father is his role model. He has been supportive of Zach’s dreams and goals and has helped him immensely with his organizational skills. Zach tutored in high school for various classes, including science and history. He tells freshmen to plan your schedule and know when it’s time to socialize and when it’s time to study.
