What to do before coming to STAR
- Reserve a STAR date as indicated in the mailing you received from the Office of Student Access, Transition and Success Programs. Available dates for students admitted to the College of Liberal Arts are June 18 - July 12.
- Complete the survey found on the Liberal Arts STAR homepage at least two weeks prior to your assigned STAR date. This is critical in assuring your placement with an academic advisor in your current area of academic interest.
- Take ALEKS. You should do this even if you plan to take an Advanced Credit Exam in math. Visit http://www.math.purdue.edu/academic/undergrad/placement to take the test. It is extremely important that you take this assessment BEFORE arriving for STAR.
- Plan on taking a foreign language placement test during your STAR date. If you intend to continue in the foreign language you studied in high school, you are required to take the placement test. We strongly encourage you to take this placement test during your STAR date. The French, German, and Spanish tests take about thirty minutes. Latin, Japanese, and Russian tests take up to one hour. Students with college credit in a foreign language may not take a placement test in that language.
- Consider taking Advanced Credit Exams. You can earn free credit, and there is no penalty or record if you do not pass. Advanced Credit Exams take two hours and are offered at 1:30 p.m. The Office of Student Access, Transition and Success Programs will provide a detailed list of exams in your confirmation packet, or you can find them listed athttp://www.purdue.edu/odos/testingcenter/welcome.php
- Read the information regarding COM 11400 to see if you qualify for departmental credit or if you want to take the credit exam for this required course. The COM 11400 credit exam is offered at 1:30 or 2:30p.m. in BRNG 1260.
- Note: If you plan to take more than one Advanced Credit Exam, you may choose to stay overnight and take exams the day before or after your scheduled STAR date. If you live close enough, you may also return on another day for additional tests.
- You will need to bring a photo ID for getting your student ID picture taken. Also, bring several #2 pencils for all credit exams. Calculators (one- or two-line display non-graphing, non-programmable only) are permitted for the math Advanced Credit Exams. Bring these items even if you do not think you will take an exam. After meeting with your advisor, you may decide that you want to do so.
- Please bring a photo of yourself to be given to your advisor at the time of your advising appointment. This photo will be placed in your student file to help us remember names and faces more easily.
- Check-in begins at 7:00 a.m., and the STAR program begins promptly at 8:00 a.m. PLEASE NOTE: The Purdue area is on Eastern Daylight Savings Time. We are an hour ahead of the Southwest Indiana area and the Chicago and Northwest Indiana areas. You may call our office at (765)494-3670 to confirm the time.
- If you have already established some college credit, have an official transcript sent from all institutions attended to the Office of Admissions at Purdue for a credit evaluation. It is essential for you to bring along any transcripts not yet evaluated along with course descriptions and course syllabi from the other colleges you have attended.
